Agatha Achindu grew up as a farmer’s daughter in Cameroon, West Africa. She only ate fresh organic food grown in her family’s gardens or purchased from local markets. When she came to the US, she brought this heritage with her, and chose not to adopt the convenient but industrialized American food system.
When her son, JZ, was born in Atlanta, like many moms she made weekly batches of food for him in her kitchen from fresh organic ingredients and froze it to use during the week. Unlike most moms, Agatha went the extra mile and started making baby food for other families in the community. She quickly became the ’go-to’ baby food chef, and was invited to teach seminars on healthy cooking and childhood nutrition in local hospitals to new and expecting moms. In September 2006, Yummy Spoonfuls® was born. Renting space in a commercial kitchen, Agatha was able to keep up with demand for her products by supplying local specialty and natural food stores. In 2009, Cookie magazine picked Yummy Spoonfuls® as the #1 baby food in the US. Agatha’s baby food soon gained a loyal celebrity following, but Agatha wanted to make her products more accessible to working moms who didn’t have the time to make baby food. So she began a five-year search for a partner who shared her values and vision to make the wonderful organic taste and healthy nutrition of Yummy Spoonfuls® available to every family in the US. When Agatha was introduced to Camila Alves in 2014, the search was over, and the path of Yummy Spoonfuls® was changed forever. They shook hands, formed a new company as 50/50 partners. Over the past two years, the partners have been hard at work to prepare Yummy Spoonfuls® for the national stage. Camila felt strongly that Agatha’s vibrant products should be showcased, so they struck on the idea of putting a clear window on the front of traditional baby-food pouches. The partners have been busy meeting with retail partners, organic farmers and suppliers, equipment and packaging suppliers, recruiting team members and spending time together in the kitchen to develop yummy new recipes. Now Yummy Spoonfuls® is the perfect solution for parents who want to feed their children fresh, nutritious organic food. You will find it soon in the frozen section at Walmart.
I am a dedicated mother, entrepreneur, and chef. As a child growing up in Cameroon, I ate only the freshest organic foods from my family’s gardens and local markets. When I was blessed to give birth to my son, Jared-Zane in 2004, like any mother, I wanted to give my son the best food that would nourish & strengthen him as he grew. My African upbringing instilled in me that food is a sacred source of life, and feeding others with your best the highest expressions of love. For me, this kind of love is not only good for the body, but it must taste good as well.
Determined to bring that love to life, I took to my kitchen to create meals packed with healthy organic ingredients and infused with natural delicious flavor and nothing else. Soon word spread and before I knew it, I began filling casual orders for friends and family. Fueled by this passion and sense of purpose, I founded Yummy Spoonfuls® in 2006. I left my six-figure job as an IT executive and did the work necessary to transform my passion from my kitchen into profit in the marketplace.
My African ingrained industriousness and American trained corporate savvy prepared me to single-handedly bring Yummy Spoonfuls into retail giants like Whole Foods Market & Dean and DeLuca. I am proud for two reasons, one, because it proved the concept that whole nutritious food can be made commercial and second, it showed that with passion, a commitment to excellence and a great deal of grit, any woman, especially an immigrant like me can take her vision and bring it to life. Yummy Spoonfuls is a living testament to the power of passion, love and hard work.
As Yummy Spoonful baby and toddler food gained a loyal celebrity following, we continued winning over families across the country through a few regional retailers and a national direct ship program through Amazon. In 2015, I partnered with fellow mom and entrepreneur, Camila Alves, to expand Yummy Spoonfuls® and fulfill our collective vision of providing fresh, organic foods to children. I am still amazed at the blessings this journey continues to unfold.
Today, I am a sought-after healthy eating expert and certified integrative nutritionist, who has appeared on CNN, Today Show, Fox Business News, Essence.com CBS, Style Network, People.com and more, and I serve as the founder and Chief Marketing Officer for Yummy Spoonfuls®. Along with my most important roles of wife and mother, it is my honor to spend much of my time outside of the kitchen today creating awareness around the goodness of Yummy Spoonfuls, empowering women through my story and helping families around the world eat well and live better.
I was born in Brazil and raised in a family of farmers. I grew up with a strong connection to the tastes and aromas of freshly-picked ingredients. I remember climbing trees and eating sweet mangoes right off the branch. And yes, there’s truth to the story that I used to bolster my pocket money by selling surplus fruit on the roadside!
As a mother, I want the same healthy foundation for my three growing kids. When my children were babies, I spent countless hours making baby food in a messy kitchen, surrounded by fresh ingredients and bowls of purees. I thought there must be a simpler way to provide fresh, unprocessed, homemade organic food for babies and tots. Meeting Agatha was the answer to my prayers. As a business-woman, I have learned a great deal about product development and innovation. I have also had the privilege to meet world-class experts and business leaders; I have relished the opportunity to partner with Walmart to bring organic frozen foods for toddlers to the frozen foods aisle nationwide. I pride myself as being a connector – of dots and of people. It’s exciting to be able to have put all these elements together on my journey with Agatha. I am thankful to have the opportunity of working with such a gifted and generous entrepreneur as Agatha. Together, we have re-imagined Yummy SpoonfulsⓇ with the goal of making it accessible to families all across America. It is our shared dream to change the way kids eat, by instilling a lifelong love for delicious, healthy food starting with their very first spoonful.
